Welcome to Camping Baleia, a unique eco-camping site at the foot of the majestic Retezat peak in the charming village of Pui, Hunedoara County, Romania. This lovingly designed campsite was founded in 2023 by Andrea and Cris - with passion, sustainability and a clear focus on being close to nature. Surrounded by the Retezat Nature and National Park, this is the perfect base for nature lovers, outdoor adventurers and those seeking peace and quiet alike.
Whether with a motorhome, campervan or tent - everyone will find their place here. The separate pitches for motorhomes have their own connections for water and electricity, while the flexible 4x4 field offers ideal conditions for off-road drivers or groups. For tent lovers, there are various areas to choose from: sunny plots with mountain views, shady meadows by the Bărbat River or forest clearings under tall trees - naturally car-free for maximum peace and quiet.
Group trips are also catered for: the group meadow offers space for expeditions, school trips, retreats or creative team events. Tents can be hired here - from small 2-person tents to large group tents with a fire pit, barbecue, kitchen, fridge, water and electricity. The sanitary facilities are modern, well-maintained and easily accessible for all guests. If you are travelling without your own tent, you can hire equipment on site.
Camping Baleia is ideally located for exploring the treasures of the Carpathians and the Transylvanian Alps. Just a few kilometres away is the gateway to the Retezat National Park, famous for its glacial lakes, hiking trails and pristine wilderness. The surrounding area is ideal for day hikes, mountain bike tours or 4x4 off-road adventures - for example to the summit of Baleia, which gives the camp its name.
Another highlight is the proximity to the Grădiștea Muncelului-Cioclovina Nature Park, home to impressive caves, mystical Dacian ruins such as Sarmizegetusa Regia and the idyllic village of Fundătura Ponorului - just a stone's throw away. Those interested in culture can also quickly reach the Țara Hațegului Geopark, known for its dinosaur fossils and historical sites.
Whether hiking, climbing, cycling or relaxing in nature - everyone will find an adventure here. In Pui itself, there are small shops, cafés and supply options, and by train or bus you can easily reach places such as Deva, Petrosani or the Jiu Valley with the extreme sports paradise Straja.
Travelling to Camping Baleia is possible both by car and sustainably by train: Pui train station is only 2.5 km away, and trains run regularly via Deva and Simeria with connections to the Bucharest-Vienna overnight train. A relaxed and natural alternative for environmentally conscious travellers, cyclists and backpackers. In addition, the ZMK regular bus service between Deva and the Jiu Valley stops every hour just 1 km from the camp - ideal for flexible hop-on hop-off tours.
Road trippers also benefit from the location: the camp is centrally located between the spectacular TRANSALPINA (60 km) and the A1 motorway (60 km). If you want to explore even further, you can reach Obârșa Lotrului, the Jiu Canyon and the Parâng and Straja sports regions from here in under an hour.
An atmosphere of openness, inclusion and tolerance awaits you here. Peace, fresh air and the sounds of nature are part of the basic facilities. Electricity, water, a waste disposal station, rental tents, fire pits and a warm host family ensure that you feel completely at ease. Whether you want to let yourself drift or get active - Camping Baleia is the perfect place to arrive, recharge and experience.
