Description

Campingplatz Margarethenruh is a charming family-run campsite located at Süderhafen on the Nordstrand peninsula in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Established more than 55 years ago, this peaceful North Sea campsite sits directly behind the sea dike in the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, offering guests a unique combination of coastal nature, tranquility, and traditional camping hospitality.

Often described as “small but fine,” the campsite is designed for motorhomes, caravans, and tents, providing a relaxed atmosphere away from crowded holiday resorts. The site is relatively compact, covering approximately 0.4 hectares with around 24 pitches, including dedicated areas for touring guests. Many pitches are sheltered by hedges and vegetation, helping to create a wind-protected environment despite the coastal location. Gravel pitches are available for motorhomes, while grassy areas accommodate caravans and tents.

Guests benefit from a range of practical camping facilities. Electricity connections are available throughout the site, and modern sanitary facilities include complimentary hot-water showers. A service room provides washing-up facilities, a microwave, convection oven, refrigerator, kettle, washing machine, and tumble dryer, making longer stays comfortable and convenient. Free Wi-Fi is available across the campsite, allowing guests to stay connected while enjoying a peaceful outdoor holiday.

The campsite also features a heated conservatory-style lounge and common room where guests can relax, read, socialize, or watch television during cooler weather. Families appreciate the children's playground and covered barbecue area, while fresh bread rolls can be ordered daily. A bistro serving hot and cold meals is located nearby, ensuring that dining options are always within easy reach.

The location is one of Margarethenruh’s greatest strengths. Within less than a minute’s walk, guests can reach the sea dike and enjoy panoramic views across the Wadden Sea. The nearby natural bathing area on the North Sea is approximately 250 metres away, making it easy to enjoy swimming, sunbathing, birdwatching, and spectacular sunsets. Whether you arrive with a tent, caravan, or motorhome, Campingplatz Margarethenruh offers an authentic North Sea camping experience surrounded by nature and fresh sea air.

Campingplatz Margarethenruh enjoys an excellent location on the Nordstrand peninsula, one of the most distinctive coastal destinations in northern Germany. Situated directly beside the Wadden Sea National Park, the campsite is a perfect base for discovering the unique tidal landscapes that have earned UNESCO World Heritage status.

Just 250 metres from the campsite, visitors can reach a natural North Sea bathing area where they can swim during high tide or simply enjoy the fresh coastal atmosphere. The nearby Süderhafen marina is only a few minutes' walk away and offers opportunities to watch sailing boats, enjoy waterfront views, or begin excursions into the surrounding region.

Nordstrand is famous for guided mudflat walks (Wattwanderungen), one of the most popular activities in the area. These guided tours allow visitors to explore the fascinating ecosystem of the Wadden Sea safely while learning about local wildlife and tidal phenomena. Cycling is equally popular, with extensive dike-top cycling routes providing spectacular views across the coastline and neighboring Halligen islands.

For day trips, the historic town of Husum lies approximately 20 km away and can be reached in around 25 minutes by car. Known as the birthplace of writer Theodor Storm, Husum offers attractive harbor promenades, cafés, restaurants, museums, and shopping opportunities. Boat excursions from the region take visitors to seal banks, Halligen islands, and other destinations within the North Frisian coastal landscape.

Restaurants, bakeries, cafés, a bus stop, a small harbor, and local services can be found within approximately 50–150 metres of the campsite. Additional supermarkets and shopping facilities are available around 3.5 km away. Visitors can also enjoy birdwatching, horseback riding, sailing, windsurfing, fishing, and nature photography throughout the peninsula.

The peaceful surroundings, open skies, and ever-changing tides make Nordstrand an exceptional destination for travelers seeking both relaxation and outdoor adventure along Germany’s North Sea coast.

Good to know

Campingplatz Margarethenruh is open almost year-round and welcomes guests seeking a quiet camping holiday on the North Sea coast. Due to its popularity among returning visitors, advance reservations are recommended, particularly during summer holidays and special regional events.

Upon arrival, guests should register with the campsite management before entering the grounds. The reception office is generally open from 09:15–12:00 and 14:00–18:00. If staff are temporarily unavailable, guests can contact the campsite directly by telephone for assistance and pitch allocation.

The campsite is particularly well suited to nature lovers, cyclists, walkers, and motorhome travelers who appreciate peaceful surroundings rather than large-scale entertainment complexes. Free Wi-Fi is available, although guests should be aware that internet speeds are primarily suitable for emails, messaging, and basic browsing rather than high-definition streaming.

Because the campsite is located within the Wadden Sea region, tides play an important role in daily activities. Guests planning mudflat walks should always participate in guided tours and check local tide schedules. Weather conditions on the North Sea coast can change quickly, so windproof clothing and waterproof footwear are recommended throughout much of the year.

Families will appreciate the playground and safe environment, while pet owners can enjoy walking routes along the dikes and coastal paths. A daily bread-roll service helps make mornings convenient, and nearby dining options provide additional flexibility for meals.

Motorhome guests benefit from fresh water supply and greywater disposal facilities. Laundry equipment, cooking facilities for tent campers, sanitary amenities, and communal indoor spaces add comfort to longer stays. The combination of excellent facilities, direct access to nature, and the relaxing atmosphere of Nordstrand makes Campingplatz Margarethenruh an ideal choice for a traditional camping holiday on Germany’s North Sea coast.
